I have been travelling regularly to Portugal for the last 20 years with my job. Steadily, veganism is growing. I used to have to put up with salad and chips in 50 percent of the “local” restaurants and in most of the others, they used to bring me unbelievably dull grilled vegetables and rice. I hate to think what was on the grill before the veg. Offence was always taken when their “pastel de nata” custard tarts were refused. But things are definitely on the up. Portugal is the first country to make it illegal not to offer a vegan menu in public buildings such as schools, hospitals and prisons. Well done!

About Lisbon

Lisbon has transformed itself in recent years from a shabby poor unloved city into one of the trendiest and most thriving cities of the world. The Portuguese capital is also home to one of the fastest growing vegan communities in Europe and hosts 35 vegan establishments according to Happy Cow. The best areas to visit are the Barrio Alto and Alfama – both districts have great vegan offerings and a lively cafe culture. Lisbon can be surprisingly hilly so we recommend a good pair of walking shoes; it certainly helps the appetite which you’ll need for our food intensive tour with our gregarious tour leader, Tatie! If you want to extend your stay elsewhere after the tour, we recommend Sintra and Cascais, or Porto for the adventurous.
